Prelude

Master Arjan Dang

Arjan Dang is our Head Monk. He has an amazing intuitive sense that allows him to completely adjust his conversation to each individual person or situation. It’s a lot easier to help someone if both of you are on the same wavelength. Arjan seems to know how to get on to anyone’s wavelength! His unstained concern allows him to override what we would think of as a normal separation of mentalities. I have seen him exercise this sensitivity many times. He has given me things as I think about asking for them.

Master Teacher

Imagine how special you might have to be to teach broken folks wholeness, set enslaved people free — or to help piece together a family that’s torn or rescue a heart from damaging scorn.

This master teacher is no mere preacher. He speaks wordless volumes of crystalline logic with no pretense. No quoted scripture or affected flash of the eye is necessary to impress, as he adjusts his reality to feel and then heal your distress. Multiple styles and rhythms in a single song pronounce definitions of gentle-yet-strong while he’s lending his right to the part you got wrong.

He charges no fee. He requests nothing.

Master Teacher can give you a ride to your destination while you drive your own car, whether it’s pointed toward a church or a bar. He teaches how to read life’s maps, and that by not speeding we avoid speed traps. He explains why and how not speeding gets us faster to where we are going, and how speeding often results in a slowing.

Master Teacher is not reading from spiritual texts or magically exorcizing some evil hex. He detects what vexes you and reveals why. Then teaches your thinking to self-clarify.

As the smoke clears from what you were thinking, you can now clean up what was stinking and rejuvenate what was shrinking. Master Teacher helps you to resolve strife and enjoy life to its fullest. This teaches joy to stay self-repairing. It inspires decency, caring, and sharing.

Life can be more frightening than lightning and thunder under ordinary circumstance. But this Master teaches extraordinary resilience as an ordinary circumstance and in this way beats fear at its own game.

Esoteric yet down to earth, product of stable and daily rebirth, he facilitates growth without the fertilizer. He is a quantum realizer. Many come to Arjan seeking help in finding the light. The light itself looks forward to seeing him. He and the light share the same root system. Master Teacher is the fruit of humanity’s finest tree.

Bet More

Monk Bet More

Arjan, the head monk, is the adhesive that holds the whole Temple/Village unit together. Monk Bet is the glue that cements local happiness. Sadness runs when it sees him. It runs like a poodle who sees the same German Shepherd that bit him in the nuts yesterday. Bad analogy. Bet would never treat anything that harshly. Visiting troubles do leave his presence quickly, but it’s not because he attacks them. It’s more like he buys them a cup of coffee and gives them a ride to the bus stop.

Monk Bet is a Master Electrician in both the physical and metaphysical senses. If a light goes out or a pump stops, he gets it working again — whether the problem is in a temple building, fellow temple resident, or a village visitor.

All of the Temple’s residents work on the grounds. Some do more while Arjan is around so “the boss” knows they’re doing it. I like to do more when he’s not around, just to prove to myself that I’m not working to impress him or anyone else. Bet is way past all this nonsense. He wouldn’t care whether a mangy dog or Buddha himself was watching. Monk Bet is going to do what needs to get done while being his happy, helpful self — all day, all week, all the time.

Bet entered life with some advantages. He was born and raised in this village. The man who I think of as a father is Bet’s uncle in real life. Bet had a good start.

But starting well doesn’t get you there. Even with the best of starts many people dissipate, lose focus, ignore their potential, and turn to garbage. It takes consistent work and practice to cement a good start into a sustained good function. Bet obviously has done and continues to do the work.

Controlling what one pays attention to has some amazing benefits.

It shocks me to realize that I could be as happy and helpful as Bet. Everyone has the ability to grow up. We all have imaginative facilities capable of reconstructing our lives. We each can decide what we want the content of our minds, and our lives, to be. All it takes is to be more like Bet — to put a little effort into being and feeling better each and every day.

What are you doing today? How about tomorrow?

Bet asks me those questions every day without ever saying a word.

About the Author
